Lawmakers Approve Budget And Adjourn Session

Hmm, can you just quit work in the middle of the day and still get your FULL paycheck? Yeah, I didn’t think so.

Originally posted on CBS Miami:

TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/News Service of Florida) – Lawmakers passed an election-year budget of $77.1 billion — the largest state spending plan in history — before closing out the 2014 legislative session and heading home to campaign.

Lawmakers approved the budget by lopsided margins — 102-15 in the House and a unanimous 40-0 in the Senate. Moments after the final votes, House Speaker Will Weatherford and Senate President Don Gaetz brought down the final gavels of the legislative session, ending the annual meeting at 10:40 p.m. Friday.

Gov. Rick Scott praised the results of the session, his last before he faces voters in November.

“Let’s think about what we accomplished: $500 million back in Florida families’ pockets. Lower tuition for every Florida family,” Scott said after the conclusion. “It doesn’t matter what country you were born in, what family or what zip code. You will have your shot to live the American…

12 Really Sexist Vintage Ads To Make Your Blood Boil

Did that stupid Veet advert which claimed having body hair basically made you a dude leave you seething?

Advertisers today still occasionally get it wrong – but it’s nothing compared to what they used to get up to.

Here’s 12 vintage ads that thought little of a spot of misogyny to sell their natty ties and jumpers. Don Draper has nothing on these guys.

1. Err, how is he planning to show her exactly? We don’t like the look of where this is going.

2. ‘If you’d like your own doll-to-doll carpeting get a pair of Mr Leggs slacks’. We really hope no one puts an open flame next to those shiny nylons.

More easy additive-free weekend baking … in search of naturally Red Velvet !

As a Southern Belle, I have a healthy appreciation for all that is Red Velvet – cake, cupcakes, whatever. I’m also a huge fan of baking. I’ll post my creations very soon.

I do not understand the popularity of red velvet.

For the first time i made it at a hotel and it will be the last.

I was not happy with the amount of red coloring it contains. Yes it looks pretty, luscious cream cheese frosting may make it irresisible and camouflage the after taste of the artificial additives. I always love a good home made cream cheese frosting … Yummm..

But the cake? I will not be making it again. I had a mental image of red trails traveling down my digestive system and simply could not manage more than a mouthful. And when I see it now on pretty cake stands and elegant trolleys I do not feel comfortable at the thought of someone eating it .

So together with Luke and Ayrton we adapted Ambassador Abercrombie Winstanley’s chocolate cake recipe . A great result but perhaps not as…

Hackers Slip Through A Microsoft “Watering Hole”

Attackers Use Microsoft Security Hole Against Energy, Defense, Finance Targets

Internet Explorer zero-day vulnerability actively being exploited in the wild

” By the time Microsoft warned customers of a nasty security hole in its web browser Saturday, a sophisticated group of attackers were already using the vulnerability against defense and energy companies, according to FireEye, the security company.

Things went from bad to worse over the weekend. FireEye’s researchers watched as the attackers shared their exploit with a separate attack group, which began using the vulnerability to target companies in the financial services industry, according to Darien Kindlund, the director of threat intelligence at FireEye.

Even after Microsoft issued its advisory on Saturday, Mr. Kindlund said, “There was a notable increase in proliferation.”

Soon, the attackers were using the vulnerability for so-called watering hole attacks, in which hackers infect a popular website with malware, then wait for victims to click to the site and infect their…

Weekend Edition – Story as a port in the storm plus writing tips and good reads

So true!

camp readerA good story is a port in any storm.

I missed you all last weekend. Even as I was sealing boxes and hauling load after load of books and clothes and unwieldy furniture up two, long flights of stairs into our new apartment, I was looking forward to being back here today. And, even though I am still surrounded by as yet unpacked boxes, I am happy to be typing this missive from our bright new space. Our home may not be fully put together yet, but I have my laptop, an Internet connection, and my two cats – one on either side of me on the couch. Life is good.

Like any move, ours was not without drama. The low point came in the afternoon of the “Big Move” day when we thought the younger of our two cats had escaped the house and gone missing. After an agonizingly…
