Ava DuVernay, an award-winning writer, producer, director and distributor of independent films, was recently inducted into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., as an honorary member.

Presiding over the formal induction was Alpha Kappa Alpha’s International President Attorney Carolyn House Stewart.

In making the announcement, Stewart explained that an honorary membership is the highest membership category the Sorority presents. “Those who are inducted,” she said, “represent the highest standards of character, courage and womanhood. Through her creativity, trailblazing work in film, and her passion towards her craft, Ava DuVernay embodies the Alpha Kappa Alpha ideal. Most of all, through her work, she serves the worldwide community. This commitment is captured in Alpha Kappa Alpha’s credo: ‘Providing service to all mankind.’” Stewart stressed that service is the core mission upon which the Sorority was founded in 1908.”

We decided to re-watch this wonderful miniseries based on the writing of the Pulitzer Prize winning author, David McCullough.  History comes alive with the superb acting, writing and story!   Yes, the inspirational  story of beginning of the United States of America.  It shows and tells the brave farmer army which took on the greatest army in the world, the writing of the Declaration of Independence, Adams and Jefferson in Europe, President George Washington and much more.  You might find yourself “binge watching” this seven episode miniseries.  It is available on HBO On Demand.

Fashion Meets Literature At New Detroit Bookstore

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) – Susan Murphy wants to bring her love of reading, classic works of literature and spending time looking over various titles to a new bookstore on the Avenue of the Fashion on Livernois in Detroit.

Murphy is bringing Pages on Livernois to northwest Detroit this fall, fulfilling a dream.

“Reading books really impacted my life early on. I would like to give that experience to other people,” said Murphy. “I think a brick and mortar store will bring books to the forefront.”

The approximately 1,200-square-foot bookstore, which will be located on Livernois south of Outer Drive, will be located in the former Hunter’s Supper Club, on the south end the U-shaped building on Livernois. It will have access to a courtyard in the middle.

Leading up to the opening, Murphy has been gaining practical experience by operating a pop-up store in the Rust Belt Market…
