Honorary Whites and the Collective Black

Memphis Grizzlies v San Antonio Spurs - Game One

If there’s one thing Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling’s banal discourse on race reveals is a fundamental dynamic in our “post-racial” society. Much of mainstream America virulently denies it is racist, while simultaneously having racist attitudes and beliefs. Of course the mainstream media will deny this, and call for Sterling’s head, if nothing else out of pure embarrassment. But what played out between Sterling and his girlfriend, V. Stiviano, on their now-infamous 9:23 conversation, yields insight into the middle ground Latin@s hold in America’s evolving race debate.

Let’s not even get into the connection between racism and patriarchy here, where Sterling’s main motivation seems to be that as an eighty something year-old playboy, he can’t stand to see his twentysomething girlfriend post photos of herself with Magic Johnson on Instagram. Outside of that, he insists, he loves black people. He’s fine with making millions in philanthropic contributions to…

Sterlings Clippers Silver

Well, well, well…there is justice after all. According to TMZ Sports, Donald Sterling is no longer the controlling owner of the Los Angeles Clippers! Sterling just surrendered control to his estranged wife, Shelly Sterling and she is now secretly negotiating with the NBA to sell the team. However, she will only sell on “HER TERMS”.

Sources close to the Clippers organization tell TMZ that Donald made the decision because he saw the handwriting on the wall as long as he remained in control, the NBA would order an involuntary sale of the team.

Sources are telling TMZ that Shelly and her lawyer, Pierce O’Donnell, have been secretly meeting with NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and NBA lawyers to,

“resolve the dispute amicably.”

TMZ reports that while Shelly realizes the NBA wants the team sold, she has significantly more leverage and credibility with the league than does Donald and her…

What a class act!

CHICAGO (AP) —  Magic Johnson joked about his involvement in the controversy surrounding Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling on Sunday while delivering the keynote address at the National Restaurant Association Show.

Johnson’s remarks focused on his restaurant and food services businesses, but he did briefly mention the Sterling situation at the start of his 50-minute talk.

“These last two weeks, I don’t know,” he said. “I thought I should go back to the food service industry because these last two weeks have been unbelievable.

“But I’m glad to be here and even with that said, I still have a big smile on my face.”

Johnson, the NBA Hall of Famer turned entrepreneur, was thrust into the news because part of Sterling’s racist rant on the audio released by TMZ last month focused on him. Sterling complained that his female friend, V. Stiviano, had posed for a picture with Johnson and…
