For this week’s installment of VIBE Rewind, VIBE takes a look back at a 2011 live performance by six-time Grammy nominated artist Janelle Monae. Janelle who’s known for her eclectic music and style, covers a song called “Smile” that is originally from Charlie Chaplin’s 1936 film ‘Modern Times.’ The song “Smile” also happens to be the late great Michael Jackson’s favorite song which happened to be sang by his Jackson 5 bandmate and brother Jermaine Jackson at Michael’s memorial service. June 25th, will mark the five year anniversary of the King of Pop’s death. Check out the cover below.

The video, directed by the Young Astronauts (who are thus far most known for their work on a few Cody Simpson and Ariana Grande videos), is steeped in the color and styling of a Wes Anderson movie, to a point. It’s more of a nod than a full on copy, but that otherworldliness and washed-out color sets the story not quite in the present. That is basically the only thing…

They met by chance, and now the friendship between Kimbra and Janelle Monáe has turned into one of the finest co-headlining tours of the year.

Janelle Monáe and Kimbra: The Golden Electric Tour will play one show at Auckland’s Vector Arena on May 24.

They have also released a joint single; a mash-up of Aretha Franklin’s Rock Steady and Michael Jackson’s Wanna be Startin’ Somethin’.

The pair met when they were both playing at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2013, where they met and started jamming, just for fun.

Fast-forward to 2014 and Monáe and Kimbra’s musical collaboration is hitting the road.

The production will feature both joint and individual performances – both artists will perform separate sets with their bands, as well as performing together.

Monáe released her second album, The Electric Lady, late last year, which hit top five on the Billboard charts…
