Hawaii Obamacare Exchange Only Signed Up 8,000 Consumers After Receiving More Than $200M In Federal Funds

HONOLULU (CBSDC/AP) — Hawaii lawmakers have approved $1.5 million in state funding to prop up its troubled health insurance exchange built under President Barack Obama’s federal health care overhaul.

The amount approved by House and Senate lawmakers Tuesday was well below the $4.7 million that Hawaii Health Connector officials asked for.

The exchange under the Affordable Care Act has been plagued with problems, including software issues that delayed open enrollment and low signups.

The exchange received more than $200 million in federal funds to open, yet signed up only about 8,000 in its first six months.

Lawmakers spent significant time debating potential fixes during the legislative session.

Sen. Sam Slom, a Republican who represents Waialae-Kahala, says the health exchange does not have a business plan that works. He says it has been nothing but a financial disaster.

Obamacare Missteps Force Sibelius Resignation

WASHINGTON (AP) — Embattled Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius is resigning as the White House seeks to move past the election-year political damage inflicted by the rocky rollout of President Barack Obama’s signature health care law.

Sebelius’ resignation comes just over a week after sign-ups closed for the first year of insurance coverage under the so-called Obamacare law. The opening weeks of the enrollment period were marred by widespread website woes, though the administration rebounded strongly by enrolling 7.1 million people by the March 31 deadline, exceeding initial expectations. Enrollment has since risen to 7.5 million as people were given extra time to complete applications.

Even with the late surge in sign-ups, the law remains unpopular with many Americans and Republicans have made it a centerpiece of their efforts to retake the Senate in the fall.
